Finding our Identity

Its been a crazy road so far in the last 3 years for us here at Blackhole Comics! We’ve gone from printing a handful ashcans at Office Max to printing full sized issues in much larger print runs, we’ve got our books in multiple comic shops, and we’ve gone from selling nothing at conventions to breaking even! We’ve found some amazing artists to work with like Daniel Govar, Ruben Rojas, Brian Middleton, Luca Cicognola, Anderson Carman, Kieth Silverman, Antonio Crew, JJ Murphy, Chauncey Blakey, and John Johnston! I also like to think we found a little bit more about ourselves as well…

Our tone and our style isn’t the same as Marvel or DC, we aren’t as gritty as Image or Vertigo, we aren’t as dark or as adult as some of the other guys out there, and that’s ok. It’s not to say those sort of stories aren’t enjoyable, or even that they aren’t in our future, I think what it says is we’re focusing on light hearted superhero comics. I think that with the dark overtones in a lot of the superhero stuff out there right now, that’s a good thing.

We know that our target audience isn’t necessarily the guy that picks up 20 books a week at the comic shop, but maybe he’ll like it too, and add it to his list. We’re maybe better suited to some of the younger kids that want to get into reading comics, and need something of their own, something their generation can grow with. It’s good to know who your audience is, and I think we’re starting to figure that out.  As we near completion of our 3rd different title, Quinn-Finity, we still have so many characters and so much story to tell, we can only hope you’ll be patient with us as we do our best to grind it all out!!!

Being a small local self publisher, we’re doing our best with the resources we have. We’ve come a long way, and plan to go even farther! We hope you’ll stick along for the ride. 😉 Until then though, I hope you’ll enjoy this teaser poster of things to come by Ruben Rojas! Follow us on twitter @BlackholeComics to get more info on the characters!

-JJ is constantly honing his skills, and I’ve been lucky enough to watch the constant evolution of JJ, aka The Graphitist, for the last few years! It’s only a matter of time before I’m hyping up our first team up on a comic! He recently donated 9 awesome commission pieces to the Proton #0 Kickstarter campaign! He was a large part of its success, and why the book will be available at Heroes Con!

-Anderson is currently blazing a trail of success through the halls of S.C.A.D. (Savannah College of Art and Design), where he constantly feeds his ambition to be the next Skottie Young! He has a great talent for drawing “Chimera” pieces, where you suggest two animals and he amalgamates them into one! The results are often amazing! Anderson recently drew the ominous variant cover to Proton #0!

-John Johnston is a Heroes Con vet! I first met him there a couple of years ago as my table was next to his.  I was proposing several “Versus” match-ups including Dazzler vs Booster Gold, Zatanna vs Scarlet Witch, and Damien Wayne (Robin) vs Jason Todd (Red Hood) and he couldn’t help but add his thoughts. He even drew some awesome art to accompany the debates! (Pictured below!) Recently he donated some commission work to the Proton #0 Kickstarter campaign, and will be doing a variant cover for an upcoming Blackhole Project!

-Connecting with Daniel for Proton #0 may just prove to be the best decision I’ve ever made! His awesome style and use of ink wash gives a unique and classic feel that really add character to the book. His work is almost always instantly recognizable too, which is one of the toughest things to do as an artist! To have a personal style that can be identified right away is invaluable, and he has it. Working with him on Proton was a great experience, and one that I am surely better for!

I’m not as talented in the art department as the guys above me, but I do like to sling some ink from time to time! Here are some highlights from last year’s #Inktober! I’m proud to say I did indeed post an inked picture every day of the month! I drew a lot of my original characters that’ll be showing up in future comics, so check them out!

And here are some teases for my in progress works on Cynical and The Brick mini comics with Ruben Rojas and Manuel Bracchi!

Blackhole Comics Encourages You to Support Local/Small Press Comics!

Blackhole Comics Presents: The Proton Issue #0 Kickstarter Project!

Supporting local and small time products is more popular now than ever it seems, and with the emergence of Kickstarter it’s also easier than ever! I’m looking to take advantage of that resource and attempt to fund the remainder of my own project! Proton issue #0 written by Nick Flair and drawn/inked by Danial Govar will be the next printed book from Blackhole Comics! It launches today (2/6/2015) on Kickstarter.com and you can become a backer Here!

Why should you back this project? That’s a fair question.

Here are the Top 3 Reasons You Should Back the Proton #0 Kickstarter!!!

1. It’s a pretty cool story!

I know I’m biased, but I think it’s a cool 16 page story. It pits Proton, the super-powered hero and protector of an alien planet called Vellia, versus his powerful and evil nemesis Negaton! An armada led by Negaton makes its way towards Proton’s home carrying a lethal load of high yield weapons called Negati Bombs, and the one thing that can stop them is the unrelenting hero Proton! He takes on his rival head to head in an all out battle! Will he succeed in stopping the attack on his home world? You’ll have to read it to find out!

2. The Awesome art of Daniel Govar!

Daniel Govar is a fantastic up and coming artist you probably haven’t heard of, but this guy is top-tier! He’s current;y working on some up and coming projects for Marvel Comics and he does fan commissions seemingly non-stop! Check out his Instagram Here or his website Here for more of his great work! Check out some of the pencils and inks from Proton issue #0 below!

3. Backing means there’s more to come!

By backing this project you’re giving me momentum that will swing into future projects! Not only are there more stories to be told in the World of Proton beyond this single self-contained issue, but there are plans for more characters and their own stories moving forward! Guardian, Cynical, and Amp all appeared in my first mini comic, but I have plans for multiple mini comics in the future! Each of the three will get their own story, and many other new and exciting characters will be introduced as well! If you haven’t read the first Guardian mini comic I published, good news! It’s in one of the reward tiers for backing Proton! Help me build the comics universe I have trapped inside my head, I think you’d like it!

I like to live by the motto “The World is Ours to Make”, and I believe that. From the small decisions that shape our day from start to finish, to the desire to create and bring art and story to life for others to enjoy even for a moment, we all make the world what it is through our actions. My actions are to create stories. My actions are to seek out a way to bring those stories to life and share them. You have the opportunity to take an action that can help move forward my dreams, and I want to say thank you for even reading this far and giving me the chance to persuade you!

Here is the link to my Kickstarter! Check out the great rewards, and if you feel it worthy, back my project!

Proton #0

Proton is the most major project by Blackhole Comics to date! It’s a 16 page story that introduces us to a hero from another world, a planet called Vellia. Proton is the mantle of a bloodline that has special attributes dating back longer than anyone can remember, and provides every generation of Vellians with a protector. This is the story of the current Proton as he receives word that his arch nemesis, Negaton, prepares for an attack on his home world. The art is masterfully done by Daniel Govar and if you haven’t been privileged enough to see his stuff before, You are in for a treat! Because I’m such a good guy, here is a preview page from the book:burton_proton_04_150

Check out more of Daniel here.

This zero issue will be a good stand alone story, but I hope to turn it into our first On-Going series here at Blackhole Comics! Stay tuned here at Blackhole-Comics.com for progress on this project, and also remember you can donate to the project at anytime with the Paypal donate button on the left side of the page! Leave a note with your contact info with any donation, and I’ll send you a copy of Proton #0 when it’s finished with an Exclusive Variant cover! Support Independent Comics!!!
