What does 2018 Hold for Blackhole Comics?!?

As we wrap up 2017, I sit and realize how much we really set up 2018 for a smash ’em up year! For starters we have Nick Flair and Ruben Rojas putting the final touches on Proton #2! Power packed punches will be thrown, and they won’t all be towards the bad guys! Check out these pages from Issue #2!

Nick and Ruben will follow that up with Blackhole Universe #2 and finally bringing some highly anticipated characters and their stories onto the pages! Sara Squires, Black Whisper, and Red Breeze will all be featured in the second issue as well as returning Cynical and bringing in his arch-rival Guardian! That story will be handled artistically by Blackhole Comics new comer Boris Kay! We’re really excited to see him add to our Universe and take on these key characters!

Speaking of new additions to the team, Jose Pares is getting fired up to bring some art to the table, and will be handling some character design work for us! Later down the road in 2018 I’m sure we’ll see even more from him! Check out some of the art from these guys, and Ruben’s take on Sara Squires below!

With Brian Middleton Jr on deck for more Quinn-Finity as well, 2018 has the potential to be our most productive year to date! I’m excited for all the possibilities! If you need to catch up on any Blackhole Comics titles, be sure to head to Comixology.com and get ready for all the new books we’ll be dropping in the new year! Until then guys, remember; The World is Ours to Make!!!

2 More Blackhole Comics Titles Available Digitally!

Blackhole Universe #1 and Quinn-Finity #1 are now both available for digital download at Comixology.com!

For the Teen and up readers Blackhole Universe will travel around our world of heroes and villains! The first issue starts with the origin story of a major Blackhole villain; Cynical. The second story stars The Brick as he fights off the Five Headed Dragon Clan to protect his greatest secret!

In a lighter, all ages book, Quinn-Finity pairs unstoppable imagination with unlimited power in her first issue. The story titled “Universal Razzle Dazzle Dragon Boogers” pits Quinn against some booger stealing Punk-bots! She’ll have to become heroes like Razzle Dazzle, Popcorn Kid, and even Dragon Girl to stop them!

We’ll continue to release our books digitally as well as in print moving forward, so if we aren’t in a shop nearby, you can still get your fix! Go catch up on these titles today!

Finding our Identity

Its been a crazy road so far in the last 3 years for us here at Blackhole Comics! We’ve gone from printing a handful ashcans at Office Max to printing full sized issues in much larger print runs, we’ve got our books in multiple comic shops, and we’ve gone from selling nothing at conventions to breaking even! We’ve found some amazing artists to work with like Daniel Govar, Ruben Rojas, Brian Middleton, Luca Cicognola, Anderson Carman, Kieth Silverman, Antonio Crew, JJ Murphy, Chauncey Blakey, and John Johnston! I also like to think we found a little bit more about ourselves as well…

Our tone and our style isn’t the same as Marvel or DC, we aren’t as gritty as Image or Vertigo, we aren’t as dark or as adult as some of the other guys out there, and that’s ok. It’s not to say those sort of stories aren’t enjoyable, or even that they aren’t in our future, I think what it says is we’re focusing on light hearted superhero comics. I think that with the dark overtones in a lot of the superhero stuff out there right now, that’s a good thing.

We know that our target audience isn’t necessarily the guy that picks up 20 books a week at the comic shop, but maybe he’ll like it too, and add it to his list. We’re maybe better suited to some of the younger kids that want to get into reading comics, and need something of their own, something their generation can grow with. It’s good to know who your audience is, and I think we’re starting to figure that out.  As we near completion of our 3rd different title, Quinn-Finity, we still have so many characters and so much story to tell, we can only hope you’ll be patient with us as we do our best to grind it all out!!!

Being a small local self publisher, we’re doing our best with the resources we have. We’ve come a long way, and plan to go even farther! We hope you’ll stick along for the ride. 😉 Until then though, I hope you’ll enjoy this teaser poster of things to come by Ruben Rojas! Follow us on twitter @BlackholeComics to get more info on the characters!

And of course remember… The World is Ours to Make!

What’s Next for Blackhole Comics?

With Proton #1 finished and in print, I’m excited to finally officially announce our next book to release by summer’s end… Quinn-Finity! This will be an all ages book written by Nick Flair, with art by Brian Middleton Jr!

Quinn-Finity Promo Art by Brian Middleton Jr.
Quinn-Finity Promo Art by Brian Middleton Jr.

Quinn is a girl with a great imagination, and combined with her superhero obsession, has led to an almost infinite number of alter egos! Whether it’s the Popcorn Kid, or Razzle Dazzle, Quinn is always powered up for some super adventure! The question is though… Are these adventures all in her imagination? Or are there more Cosmic forces at work…

Writing Quinn-Finity is maybe the most fun I’ve had writing ever, and I’m excited to share it with the world! We’ll work hard to get it out to you guys as soon as we can. Taking cues from the likes of Power Puff Girls, and Adventure Time, this book is going to be pretty off the wall crazy fun!  I really think you can enjoy it whether you’re 5 or 50!

Keep your eyes peeled here for updates as we get closer to release!

Attention RVA Fans! BLackhole Will Arrive at Velocity Comics This Wednesday!!!

As a small press publisher out of RVA, I’m proud and excited to announce this Wednesday February 10th, 2016 Velocity Comics in the heart of VCU and Richmond will be carrying both Blackhole Universe #1 and Proton #0!

Velocity has been supplying the crazy kids on the VCU campus and the unique characters of downtown Richmond with comics for what seems like an eternity! They’re always very supportive of the local scene, and that tradition carries on as Blackhole Comics find our way to their racks! Unlike any other comic shop in town both inside and out, this is a great shop with a great staff that can help you find both books you’re looking for, and turn you on to ones you didn’t even know where there! If you’re in the Richmond area and haven’t check it out, you’re missing out! ESPECIALLY now that you’ll be able to pick up Blackhole Comics there obviously!!! Swing by and pick up your copy of Blackhole Universe #1 and/or Proton #0 while supplies last!!!

First Up in 2016, Proton #1!

Blackhole Comics got 2015 started with a super successful Kickstarter campaign that allowed Proton #0 to see the light of day. Now as 2016 kicks off, I’m proud to say Proton #1 will be our premiere story!

For those who weren’t able to get a copy of the zero issue, it introduced us to Jo-Than, the most recent of his bloodline to carry the mantle of Proton! Each generation his family gives birth to a single male heir that one day becomes the protector, not just of their home planet Vellia, but of the entire Cluster system and all 32 planets that revolve around their twin stars.

He faced a deadly armada set to invade and destroy his home world led by his greatest enemy, Negaton. Proton fought with all his strength, and in the end his planet and the entire Cluster System will never be the same again.

Proton #1 will pick up after the key events of the zero issue, and will further open and explore the world we only got a small taste of.  The heroes, villains, and fantastic environments in the world of Proton will be brought to you by the incredible art of Ruben Rojas! If you haven’t seen his stuff yet, you’re missing out! He was recently first showcased in Blackhole Universe #1 taking on both Cover duties , and the Cynical story inside!

This is the start to a big year for us here at Blackhole Comics, as we have more books slated to release than ever before! Proton will be one of the cornerstone’s as we hope to have 3 issues release in addition to our other titles! Cynical will also return in the pages of Blackhole Universe #2, as well as his rival Guardian, and other new characters as well! We hope this ad by Ruben for Proton #1 gets you guys as stoked as we are for 2016, and the chance to explore more of the Blackhole Universe!!!

Proton #0

  • Heroics are often told more through actions than with words. These are the heroic actions of a man called Proton. On his home planet of Vellia, in the Cluster System, his bloodline has protected the people of his world as long as most can remember. Once per generation his lineage produces a male heir containing the Proton Helix within, and the ability to become a force for good. This is the adventure of Jo-Than, the current Proton as he battles to save his people from rare monsters and evil armadas led by his nemesis, Negaton! Written by Nick Flair Art by Daniel Govar

Blackhole Comics Goes to Heroes Con 2015!

It’s already been a big year for Blackhole Comics with Proton #0 being released, but that wasn’t enough so we decided to take the show on the road to Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC! Nick Flair, JJ Murphy, and Anderson Carman held down the Blackhole table selling copies of Proton #0, prints, and other cool things! How did it go? Here is the story of our totally awesome adventure!

It started with a 4 and a half hour drive from Richmond to Charlotte for myself (Nick Flair), JJ Murphy, and my lovely girlfriend Brittany! There was almost constant comic talk the entire way there. What’s big right now, what we wanted to happen versus what we thought would happen at the show, and what we’d get from the experience were all topics of conversation. In summation, we wanted to walk away with a renewed confidence, a mistake or two to learn from, and no copies of Proton.

We arrived around 9:45am where we met up with Anderson, and set up out table. JJ and Anderson both had their 11×17 binders full of full of awesome artwork, as well as a few prints. Anderson brought his sketch book,  and mini comic, as well as, a series of custom bookmarks he made! They featured characters from Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, and Star Wars, and had cool icons on the reverse side that represented the character or franchise. They were a major hit!!!

JJ was doing commissions, and  had a few original pieces of art available.  We had a bit of a slow start on Friday, but then a Harley Quinn Cosplayer saw a Graphitist original of her name sake, and had to have it! It was the first of several pieces of original art JJ sold! The confidence boost was strong and almost instantly noticeable! We then decided to hit up the ‘Drink and Draw’ event that night, where artists draw original pieces and they’re auctioned off for charity!

Anderson put up a couple of pieces, and JJ knocked out the new Batman design! I took the opportunity to do a little drawing myself, drawing a Proton pic I forgot to get a picture of and starting an Amp piece, and even Brittany got in on the action! I had some crayons, so she channeled her inner colorist to enhance JJ’s Proton picture! Drawing with a beer under the summer night sky of Charlotte next to a beautifully lit fountain with comic talk a flutter all around was truly a perfect end to the first day!

As for me and my Proton comic, we did pretty darn good in my opinion. After several hours of our slow start, I was pretty concerned. I didn’t want to go home with all 70 copies! Then I sold the first one to a random passer-by who thought the cover was pretty cool! It was big for me because it was the book that caught his eye, not that he was a friend, or someone who I had to talk into buying it. He just saw it and liked it. It was a great feeling!

Here’s the face I made when I sold the first copy!

The real bread and butter came Sunday though. The last day of the convention. I still had a lot of copies, and I really wanted to get them into the hands of potential fans! I decided to offer up a heck of a bargain on the last day; I offered people Proton #0 for $1.00 or for free. The goal was to move books, and this was an effective way of doing it for sure. The thing that surprised me though, and really made me happy, was that most everyone who came up PAID THE DOLLAR!!! I thought that said a lot about the crowd at Heroes Con. When offered the choice between getting something awesome for free, or supporting a small press comic creator, they chose to support me. It was a warm feeling.

Another warm feeling came from a someone I didn’t expect at all though. If you’ve ready Manhattan Projects by Jonathan Hickman and Nick Pitarra, you know those two guys have talent. I know this, because I pick up that book in collected editions every time it drops.  Einstein, chainsaws, aliens. That’s all you need to know. So I walked by the “Hickman” table with Nick Pitarra and Ryan Bodenhiem (From the Dying and the Dead, also pretty awesome in its young run), and was like ” Hey you guys are awesome! Here, have a copy of my comic!”

These guys are pro’s on the comic scene. They create books with arguably the hottest writer in all of comics right now. I just liked the idea of them reading my book. Nick Pitarra started joking with me, “Is it really a two dollar book, or is this like the thirty-eight dollar Con variant?” I laughed, and confirmed the book was only two dollars. So what did he do? HE GAVE ME TWO DOLLARS!?! I was like “I’m not pushing my book on you man, I just wanted to give you a copy!” He then told me to shut up, and take his two dollars. That was a huge sign of respect in my eyes, and probably my favorite part of the weekend. I’m keeping those two dollars as a memento.

20150625_150920As I offered copies of Proton to other artists and vendors, they all responded in a similar fashion. People wanted to trade me their comic for mine, prints, or buttons! It was a really cool feeling of community the way it went down. Maybe it’s a silly thing for me to be really excited about that, but I don’t care. It was awesome!

On the return trip, JJ and I again talked comics the entire way home. All four and a half hours of it. What we did right, what we could have done better, and what we want to do next. This Blackhole Comics thing is just getting started, and the plan is for it to get bigger and better.  Keep an eye out for what’s on the horizon!

Thanks Heroes Con for reminding us the World is Ours to Make!!!

Blackhole Comics Encourages You to Support Local/Small Press Comics!

Blackhole Comics Presents: The Proton Issue #0 Kickstarter Project!

Supporting local and small time products is more popular now than ever it seems, and with the emergence of Kickstarter it’s also easier than ever! I’m looking to take advantage of that resource and attempt to fund the remainder of my own project! Proton issue #0 written by Nick Flair and drawn/inked by Danial Govar will be the next printed book from Blackhole Comics! It launches today (2/6/2015) on Kickstarter.com and you can become a backer Here!

Why should you back this project? That’s a fair question.

Here are the Top 3 Reasons You Should Back the Proton #0 Kickstarter!!!

1. It’s a pretty cool story!

I know I’m biased, but I think it’s a cool 16 page story. It pits Proton, the super-powered hero and protector of an alien planet called Vellia, versus his powerful and evil nemesis Negaton! An armada led by Negaton makes its way towards Proton’s home carrying a lethal load of high yield weapons called Negati Bombs, and the one thing that can stop them is the unrelenting hero Proton! He takes on his rival head to head in an all out battle! Will he succeed in stopping the attack on his home world? You’ll have to read it to find out!

2. The Awesome art of Daniel Govar!

Daniel Govar is a fantastic up and coming artist you probably haven’t heard of, but this guy is top-tier! He’s current;y working on some up and coming projects for Marvel Comics and he does fan commissions seemingly non-stop! Check out his Instagram Here or his website Here for more of his great work! Check out some of the pencils and inks from Proton issue #0 below!

3. Backing means there’s more to come!

By backing this project you’re giving me momentum that will swing into future projects! Not only are there more stories to be told in the World of Proton beyond this single self-contained issue, but there are plans for more characters and their own stories moving forward! Guardian, Cynical, and Amp all appeared in my first mini comic, but I have plans for multiple mini comics in the future! Each of the three will get their own story, and many other new and exciting characters will be introduced as well! If you haven’t read the first Guardian mini comic I published, good news! It’s in one of the reward tiers for backing Proton! Help me build the comics universe I have trapped inside my head, I think you’d like it!

I like to live by the motto “The World is Ours to Make”, and I believe that. From the small decisions that shape our day from start to finish, to the desire to create and bring art and story to life for others to enjoy even for a moment, we all make the world what it is through our actions. My actions are to create stories. My actions are to seek out a way to bring those stories to life and share them. You have the opportunity to take an action that can help move forward my dreams, and I want to say thank you for even reading this far and giving me the chance to persuade you!

Here is the link to my Kickstarter! Check out the great rewards, and if you feel it worthy, back my project!
